Thatmorale was preserved is shown by the gallantry ofAmerican troops at Chateau Thierry, in the thirdbattle of the Marne; in the struggle in the St. Mihielsalient and in the taking of the Sedan. It is usualto withdraw units when their casualties havereached twenty-five per cent, but in some of thesestruggles the American units still struggled on, andcould not be restrained, even when their losses were65 per cent. Time will show how large a part the Y had.
