The general arrangement ofthese substations and the Kern River substation of the KernRiver Power Company, from which the Los Angeles Railwaypurchases power in varying amounts up to horsepower,are shown on the accompanying map. It will be noted thatthis map also shows the sizes of the motor generator unitsin the various substations and the method of looping the three-phase lines in and out of the substations on the loop. Particu-lar care has been taken in the laying out of this plant so th;\ieach substation may be fed from either direction. It willbe noted that the interconnecting high-tension lines have such. The transmission loop is fednot only with purchased power from the Kern River substa-tion, but also from a generating equipment of .5,000 kilowattscapacity which is located in the same building with the Centralsubstation and this steam equipment is used in connectionwith storage batteries at some of the substations to flattenthe load curve. Transmission Loop. The length of the transmission loop about the city is 18miles. The wires comprising the different lines are variedin size to suit the capacities of the various substations for theusual direction of feeding.
