Serviceable and reliable steam pipes may be made up of lapwelded mild steel, with heavy wrought iron flanges, the flangesbeing screwed on hot, and the ends brazed. The flanges must, ofcourse, be faced u]> to enable good joints to be made. In largersized steam pipes it will be found that joints can be kept lighterby having the flanges made with a slight boss, which is faced up for BOILER HOUSE. engine housefk;. 1. and a discussion from which every member may be able to carryaway some useful suggestion, to be put into practice when layingdown a new generating station, or when carrying out the inevitableextension of his present works. The arrangement of piping referredto in this paper is proposed for small or for moderate-sized stations,which form the majority, rather than for those very large stations tobe found in a few of the big cities, and where, possibly, specialarrangements are necessary. STEAM PIPES. The author is of opinion that in the majority of cases, thebest and most favorable arrangement of steam piping is in theform of a steam ring, running from the boiler house through theengine house and returning to the boiler house as shown in Fig is advisable that the ring should be cross connected at two ormore places, as shown at A B and C D, so that in the event of re-pairs being necessary to any pipe, say at E, the closing of thevalves
