Crohn's disease. Endoscope view of the colon of a Crohn's disease sufferer showing pseudopolyps. The polypoid appearance of the colonic lining is due to repeated episodes of ulceration and inflamma- tion. Crohn's disease can affect all parts of the digestive tract. In the colon it causes pain and bloody diarrhoea. Abscesses & fistulas (passages) may also develop. Surgical removal of the area can treat the disease, but it often recurs.
