Pyramids of Giza at sunset, near Cairo, Egypt. These monuments were built between 2600 and 2500 BC, as tombs for the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Each pyramid consists of millions of blocks of limestone, each weighing 2-4 tonnes. The pyramids, over 140 metres in height, were the tallest structures in the world when built. The Great Pyramid (right), which was built for Pharaoh Cheops (or Khufu), was the first to be built. Khafre's Pyramid is at left. The third, Menkaure's Pyramid, is not seen. The Spinx is at bottom left.
