In Fig. 1 I have plotted a portion of the curve derived fromthe results of Mahler between the limits of 55 and 63 per cent,of fixed carbon, together with the results obtained by Lord andHaas on coals lying within the same limits. The dots andcrosses represent the individual tests, and the small black tri-angles the average figures for each

In Fig. 1 I have plotted a portion of the curve derived fromthe results of Mahler between the limits of 55 and 63 per cent,of fixed carbon, together with the results obtained by Lord andHaas on coals lying within the same limits. The dots andcrosses represent the individual tests, and the small black tri-angles the average figures for each class of coal. Each class ofcoal is surrounded by a boundary line showing the extent ofvariation, or what I call the field of each coal. THE CALORIFIC VALUE OF CERTAIN COALS. 953 In Fig. 2 the same portion of the Mahler curve is given, with the average results of Lord and Haas, together with theresults of calorimeter tests of thirteen different varieties of coal, Fig. 61 60 59 58 57 56 55 51 Fixed Carbon. Per Cent of Combustible. Kelation of Heating Value to Per Cent, of Fixed points are tests by C. W. Houghton. Lettered points are averagesof Lord and Haass tests. The several coals are as follows : A, Thacker, W. Va. ; 5, Hocking Valley, O. ; B, Lawrence Co., Pa. ; 6, Big Muddy, 111.; C, Pittsburgh, Pa. ; 7, Streator, 111. ; D, Upper Freeport, Pa. ; 8, Ladd, 111. ; E, Hocking Valley, O. ; 9, Seatonville, 111. ; 1, Youghiogheny, Pa. ; 10, Wilmington, 111. ; 2, Pittsburgh, Pa. ; 11, Mt. Olive, 111. ; 3, Vanderpool, Ky. ; 12, Indiana Block ; 4, Brier Hill, O. ; 13, Indiana Lump. which were made for me last year by Mr. C. W. Houghton,, assistant in Sibley College, Cornell University, using thecoal-calorimeter of Prof. R. C. Carpenter, which is describedin the Transactions of the American Society of Mechanical En- 954 THE CALORIFIC VALUE OF CERTAIN COALS. results of these tests were as Coal Dry and Free from Carbon.
