Having carefully tested growing mushrooms last year by using the Eng- lish spawn exclusively in a greenhouse where bedding and other miscellaneous plants were grown, and the bed made in a position under the greenhouse benches, a product of three-quarters of a pound of marketable mushrooms per square foot was realized from the ven- ture. We determined to test the vari- eties of pure culture or tissue spawn, the origin and making of which has been brought about by the Department of Agriculture and which has been fully described in the American Florist. The beds were made up on October i6, and were prepared and built as sug- gested from time to time in this paper. spawn with success, it was disappoint- ing. It was probable that old spawn was supplied, as an absence of healthy looking mycelium in contradistinction to the pure culture, which when break- ing up presented masses of minute white filaments showing the dormant and healthy mushroom mycelium. This is undoubtedly a case of inferior goods, and growers have learned, and the les- son is here repeated, not to accept spawn unless in breaking up evidences of healthy mycelium are present. It was our first experience with the French spawn and an attempt to follow the in- structions of removing the strawy me- dium in which it comes after the my- celium has spread through the bed; we must confess that at no stage did we see any signs of healthy growth. The results, as seen by the following figures, justifies our faith in the domestic ar- ticle. Variety. Spawned. First Picking. Last Picking. Total Weight. Sq. Ft. Bed Surface Weight Surface.
