Rügen island bridge, Germany

The bridge was opened in October 2007 and is Germany's longest bridge, spanning kilometres and reaching a height of 42 metres above the sea. It links the Baltic island of Ruegen to the mainland at Stralsund. It was built at a cost of 125 million euros to relieve the traffic-choked Ruegendamm span which, together with ferries, had been the island's only connection to the mainland. It can carry up to 23,000 vehicles per day and the region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania hopes it will boost the area's tourism and economy.
