Empty quayside, Trinity Quay, Port of Felixstowe, Suffolk, UK.
(May 2009) The Port of Felixstowe in Suffolk is Britain's largest container terminal handling a third of the trade coming into the UK from around the world. During pervious downturns of the 1970s, 80's and 90's the port continued to grow, albeit slowly. This year, for the first time in 40 years growth has contracted and the port has seen a 20% decrease in the amount of traffic passing through over the past six months. 200 workers out of the 2,800 staff have been made redundant.
