. The street railway review . low as possible by operating plentyof cars. .Abundant provision has been made for artificial lighting. Alongeach side over the seats is a row of nine i6-c. p. frosted lamps. 594 STREET RAILWAY REVIEW [ XV, No. 9. Frosted bulbs were adopted partly on account of their moreartistic appearance, but mainly because of the superior soft, diffusedlight obtained from them. The glare of the bare filaments on arow of incandescent lamps placed as these are produces a blindingelTect. and makes reading in the car much more difficult than withthe difTused light from the frosted lamp. Furthermore, the adver-tisements in the racks can be read past a frosted lamp much morereadily than a bare lamp. The rows of seat lights are in circuitwith the two lights used for illuminating the end signs. Three 120-watt 32-c. p. Meridian lamps are placed in the ceiling and are wiredin scries with a 32-c. p. headlight lamp and a rear platformlight. .Ml heat, light and compressor motor switches and cut-outs. .\ larger axle has been used than on otlier cars of the company, the dimensions now being 4A i- at journal boxes, SA in. at thewheel fit and gear, and 5 in. at the motor bearings. A plate, 33-in. chilled cast iron wheel is used with 5^-in. flangeand 2!/.-in. tread. The fenders arc of the Chicago Union Traction Co. pattern. Theupper part of the fender, which, when extended, is locked in positionby the coupler, folds down on the lower part and the whole slidesback under the car when not in use. These fenders are carried ata fixed height above the track. As an additional protection, fenders are placed in front of the wheels back of theregular fender. .Attached to this V-shaped wheel fender arescrapers operated from the platform and arranged to be droppedon the rail, and when necessary to clear away any obstruction, snowor dirt which may have gathered thereon. The car has no permanent drawbar and consecpantly there isnothing to interfere
