Maize bran oil research. Chemist examining maize bran oil processed by a technique known as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). A supercritical fluid is any substance at a temperature and pressure above its critical point. It can be used as an alternative to an organic solvent, and SFE is an environmentally safe method to extract nutraceuticals from brans. Brans are the outer layers of cereal grains, in this case of maize (Zea mays). Brans contain nutritional and pharmaceutical chemicals, with the two known collectively as nutraceuticals. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
