Alfred made it thehome of all the learning and the arts known in thatday, and it was here that the famous and most valuableAnglo-Saxon Chronicle was commenced. WinchesterCollege has been famous since the days when Williamof Wykeham built it, in 1387-98, and arranged its 226 THE RETRO-CHOIR, WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL, WITH THECHANTRIES OF CARDINAL BEAUFORT AND BISHOP WAYNFLETE. Winchester College internal economy on the strange Scriptural symbolismwhich has made it unique in that respect amongst allschools. This included a warden and ten fellows,who represented the eleven Apostles, excluding Judas ;seventy scholars and two masters, representing theseventy-two disciples ; six chaplains and clerks, re-presenting the six deacons ; and sixteen choristers,representing the four great and twelve minor prophets. The school buildings, which extend on the south sideof the close and along the banks of the Itchen, are veryconsiderable, consisting mainly of two quadrangles,in the first of which are the residence of the warden ofthe college and surrounding offices, and the inner quad-rangle containing the school buildings, many of whichretain their ancient form and are of great chief of these are the chapel, dining-hall, dormi-tories, class-rooms, and kitchen.
