Brown rotary steam engine. Diagram showing a cross-section through the Brown rotary steam engine. The rotor, valves and gears are shown here. The arrows show where steam is admitted and where the steam exhaust points are. As with all steam engines, the steam was used to drive pistons which rotated a crankshaft, turning the energy of the steam in rotary motion, used to drive wheels, electrical generators or other devices. The rotation of the valves here is co-ordinated so that the movement of the piston itself (centre) regulated the amount of steam entering the system. This design dates from around 1912, but did not prove very practical.
