The Berbice Slave Uprising is the slave revolt in Guyana that began in February 1763 and lasted for ten months. The uprising began on Plantation Magdalenenberg on the Canje River in Berbice. As plantations fell to the slaves, the European population fled. Eventually only half of the Europeans who had lived in the colony remained. Led by Cuffy (now the national hero of Guyana), over 2500 rebels threatened European control over the Guianas. Divisions among the rebels and attacks by the Dutch led to the collapse of the rebellion. Cuffy committed suicide.
