Detail of C12th frescoes including Christ in Majesty above the C11th chancel arch of St John the Baptist's Church, Clayton, Sussex, England, UK. Christ sits in a mandorla (vesica piscis) supported by angels with apostles deep in conversation to each side. A meander frieze (band) above, a scroll frieze (band) below. The work of Cluniac monks from Lewes Priory (part of the Lewes Group of paintings) illustrating Bible scenes mainly from the Day of Judgement (Doom). The murals are true frescoes, painted in yellow & red on to damp plaster. The paintings were uncovered in 1893-95 during restoration work by Charles Eamer Kempe.
