Napoleon Watches Moscow Burn
Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor of the French in 1804. In 1812, at the head of the Grand Army, he attacked Russia and entered Moscow on September 14. After the Moscow fire, he had to retreat because of lack of supplies and winter quarters. The Russian artist Vassili Wereschtschagin painted this scene in 1893. It shows Napoleon watching Moscow burn. The painting hangs in the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg.
