Nurseries (Horticulture) New York (State) Tarrytown Catalogs; Flowers Seeds Catalogs; Vegetables Seeds Catalogs; Fruit Seeds Catalogs; Plants, Ornamental Catalogs; Gardening Equipment and supplies Catalogs. 1 2 HARDY CHOICE ORNAMENTAL SHRUBS AND TREES. F. R. PIERSON CO., TARRYTOWN-ON-HUDSON, N. S¥RINGA JAPONICA. The Giant Tree or King of Lilacs. Not a bush, as other hlacs are, but a magnificent and beautiful tree, that is found growing in only one small neighborhood in the most northern island of Japan. It makes a stout, well-branched tree, with leaves so large and handsome that it would be in demand as a grand lawn tree for its foliage alone; but when it puts forth in midsummer, when other Lilacs have long been gone, its immense clusters of white blossoms, standing stiffly up on the outer and top branches, measuring 16 X 24 inches in size, it is then, without doubt, the most showy of our ornamental trees. The old- est specimens of this tree are in Boston, where they have been for only about twelve years, and are now 15 to ao feet high, with fine heads. Very rare and choice. Price, $ each; 4 for $ These are really the choicest plants among all hardy shubbery, and do well when the proper varieties are selected. There is hardly anything that equals them when in bloom, for effectiveness, as they are then a solid mass of bloom; given good soil there is nothing that is quite so satisfactory. They are best grouped together in masses. Beau- tiful effects can be secured by planting the few hardy Japanese Lilies among them, that do well in this country, such as Roseum, Album and Auratum: these do not in- terfere with the Rhododendrons, but shoot up above them after the Rhododendrons have bloomed, producing charming effects, the foliage of the Rhododendron adding to the effectiveness of the Lilies. Neither interferes with the other. AVe have a very large stock of the finest and hardiest varieties, such as have been known
