Ortygia is the ancient centre of Syracuse and stretches out from the mainland separated by a narrow strip of water across which there is pedestrian and vehicle access. This picture is taken towards the Castello at the tip of the peninsular. Although this is the Mediterranean the sea is often rough as shown in the image and evidenced by the breakwaters.
