BCG (Tuberculosis) vaccination. Injection needle is inserted intradermally under the skin during a BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) vaccination. The needle must be inserted very superficially in this way, in order to raise a blister. The vaccine injected is a live attenuated strain of bovine Mycobacterium bovis, which stimulates sensitivity to , the bacteria which causes tuberculosis in humans. The blister progresses to a papule or a benign ulcer within 6-12 weeks, and a scar remains. Normally the upper arm or thigh is injected. Pulmonary tuberculosis affects the lungs and, apart from vaccination prevention, may be cured with antibiotic drugs.
