After that Fernando de Soto, then governor, built a fortresswhich still remains,—Castillo de la Fuerza. But it did not save thetown from being again attacked by the French in 1554, and partly de-stroyed. Before 1600 two more forts wrere erected, the Punta and MorroCastle. The first settlers raised cattle, then tobacco and sugar cane wascultivated. French, English and Dutch, as well as pirates, consideredthe fertile island attractive prey. The walls around the city werebegun in 1665. In 1762 the English fleet, under Lord Albemarle,. 282 A HUNDRED YEARS OF PROGRESS. captured it, but it was restored the following year. The captaiu-generalin 1790 was another Las Casas, who made great improvement in manyconditions of the island, introduced the culture of indigo, and madeefforts for the freedom of the slaves. When the colonies of SpanishAmerica revolted, Cuba remained true, winning the name of The EverFaithful Isle, said Ray. In 1850, driven by the injustice of Spain, Cuba took up armsagainst the mother country, and from that time until 1895 there hasbeen a succession of revolutions. Narcisso Lopez led a raid in 1848,organizing a band of six hundred in the United States, but without thecountenance of the officials. He was driven from Cuba, but returned in1851, when he was captured and put to death. An American namedCrittenden, and fifty men, were also
