Blackpool, Lancashire, UK 11th Jan, 2014. Holidaymakers enjoying the humour and catch phrases embossed in the Comedy Pavement on Blackpool’s Promenade. A celebration of comedy on an extraordinary scale. Referring to the work of more than 1,000 comedians and comedy writers, the carpet gives visual form to jokes, songs and catchphrases dating from the early days of variety to the present. The 2,200m2 work of art contains over 160,000 granite letters embedded into concrete, pushing the boundaries of public art and typography to their limits.
"I first met my wife in the tunnel of love. She was digging it at the time." Chic Murray, the famous Scottish actor and comedian, is the subject of this engraving, which has been dedicated to him. Scottish humour is appreciated throughout the World but Chic's humour is both unique and incredibly funny. Blackpool’s version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame is in the form of a giant 'Comedy Carpet' featuring jokes, quotes and comedy catchphrases from heroes of British comedy. Visitors to the seaside resort are able to take a walk down memory lane and read out the famous lines and quips by the likes of Morecambe and Wise, Ken Dodd, Frankie Howerd and Les Dawson - which cover the 1,880m² concrete and granite floor. The attraction is made up of 160,000 letters cut individually from black and red granite, and stretches across the Tower Festival Headland beneath Blackpool Tower. It took five years to make and cost £14 million.
