Solar activity, Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) combined ultraviolet image. The SDO is an Earth-orbiting spacecraft launched in 2010 by NASA and used to observe the Sun. Here, the Sun is seen at three wavelengths: 304 (orange), 211 (pink), and 171 (yellow) angstroms (all extreme ultraviolet). Channel 304 shows filaments and prominences in the upper chromosphere and lower transition region. Channel 211 shows the Sun's corona (outer atmosphere). Channel 171 shows coronal loops and the upper transition region. Image obtained on 23 January 2012, during a period of solar activity.
