View NW of the faint remains of ancient field systems on Brean Down limestone headland at the S end of Weston Bay, Somerset, England, UK. Cultivation marks & the banks of Iron Age terraced fields can be seen in the grassland & across the far promontory. As well as remains of Bronze Age & Iron Age settlement on the Down, there is a BA round barrow known as The Potter's Mound, the earthworks of an Iron Age hillfort & the site of a pagan Romano-British temple & Early Christian oratory. The Down was an island until the land was drained in medieval times, it is now attached to the mainland by a narrow neck of low-lying marsh. It is an important bird & natural history site owned by the National Trust.
