North America nebula. North is at top. This nebula (centre left) is named for its resemblance to the continent. It is part of the same nebula as the Pelican nebula (IC 5067-70, centre right), but is separated from it visually by an obscuring lane of dark dust, LDN 935. The nebulae glow red as the hydrogen gas they contain is ionised by radiation from hot stars nearby. The bright star at lower left is Xi Cygni, although this is not the star that ionises the nebulae. The nebulae lie around 1600 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. Photographed by the Oschin Telescope at Mount Palomar, California, USA.
