Fig. 167 shows a very neat arrangement of a cast-ironquarter-turn flume for a high head. The flume, by means of aflange strengthened with gussets, rests on iron beams spanningthe tail-race, or wheel-pit. The quarter-turn is made in twohalves, and has a neck strengthened with gussets throughwhich the shaft passes by a stuffing-box. This neck carries abrcJad flange to which is bolted the bridge-tree for sustainingthe crown-gears, which give motion to the horizontal shaftcarrying a pulley and belt for delivering the power. To thehorizontal end of the quarter-turn is bolted a very short lengthof pipe or, more properly, a ring, pierced with rivet-holes forattaching the wrought-iron penstock.
