Endemic to New Zealand, the Variable Oystercatcher, Haematopus unicolor, is a bird that many people will happily stop and watch as it goes about hunting for food. The Variable Oystercatcher is to be found on both North and South Islands, around the rocky and sandy coastline. There are only thought to be a few thousand Variable Oystercatchers left in the wild, but there is still a good chance to observe these birds in areas such as the Bay of Plenty.
