Energy-saving light bulb. Instead of the glowing filament of regular 'incandescent' light bulbs, energy-saving bulbs use a mechanism similar to fluorescent tubes. Electricity is passed through a gas contained within a phosphor-coated glass tube. The gas emits ultraviolet light, which causes the phosphor to glow. These bulbs are much more efficient than incandescents, as less energy is wasted as heat. They also last longer, which offsets their higher cost.
