Mountain gorillas. Female mountain gorilla and infant. The mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is one of two subspecies of eastern gorillas. It inhabits the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa and feeds mainly on leaves, shoots and stems of plants. The female's gestation period last for around 8 and a half months and there are typically 3 to 4 years between births. Infants stay with their mothers for 3 to 4 years.
