Amateur radio : how and why of wireless with complete instructions on operation of receiving outfits . through the antenna and ground the receiving set they are converted into anelectric current which produces the sound inthe phone. The phone is either one or apair of telephone receivers worn on the headof the listener. The purpose of the lightning switch is toprotect the receiving set from damage bylightning. It is used to connect the antennadirectly to ground when the receiving stationis not being used. When the antenna and theconnection to the ground are properly madeand the lightning switch is closed, an antennaacts as a lightning rod and is a protection, rather than a source of danger to the building. The principal part of the station is the re-ceiving set. In the set here described it issubdivided into two parts, the tuner and thedetector, and in more complicated sets stillother elements are added. The antenna is simply a wire suspended be-tween two elevated points. Wherever thereare two buildings, or a house and a tree, ortwo trees with one of them very close to the. 28 AMATEUR RADIO house, it relieves one of the need of erectingone or both antenna supports. The antennashould not be less than 30 feet above theground and its length should be between 75and 100 feet. (See Fig. 7.) While thisfigure indicates a horizontal antenna, it is notimportant that it be strictly horizontal. It isin fact desirable to have the far end as high aspossible. The lead-in wire or drop-wirefrom the antenna itself should run as directlyas possible to the lightning switch. If theposition of the adjoining buildings or trees issuch that the distance between them is greaterthan about 125 feet, the antenna can still beheld to a 100 feet distance between the insu-lators by increasing the length of the piece ofrope (D) to which the far end of the antennais attached. The rope (H) tying the antennainsulator to the house should not be lengthenedto overcome this difficulty, becau
