JULY I, 1652, the eccentric John Taylor, commonly calledthe Water Poet, from his having been a Waterman on theThames, paid a visit to St. Winifreds Well, at Holywell, inFlintshire. This was a place held in no small veneration evenin Taylors days; but in Catholic times, it filled great spaceindeed. There is something at once so beautiful and so bountiful ina spring of pure water, that no wonder it should become anobject of some regard among a simple people. We all feel theforce of Horaces abrupt and enthusiastic address, O FonsBlandusiai, splendidior vitro, and do not wonder that he shouldresolve upon sacrificing a kid to it. In the middle ages, whena Christian tinge was given to everything, the discovery of aspring in a romantic situation, or remarkable for the brightness,purity, or taste of its water, was forthwith followed by its de-dication to some Saint; and once placed among the category ofholy wells,
