Christiane Desroches Noblecourt (1913-2011), French archaeologist and Egyptologist. Desroches Noblecourt was the first woman to become a fellow of the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology. In 1938 she became the first woman to lead an archaeological dig. During World War II, Desroches Noblecourt joined the French Resistance and hid the Louvre's Egyptian artifacts in the free areas of France. She successfully campaigned for the protection of the ancient Nubian temples in Aswan, Egypt, from flooding by the Aswan dam. She went on to write several books on Egyptian art and history. In 2008, she was awarded the highest decoration in France, the Legion d'honneur.
