George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592 – 1628), was an English courtier, statesman, patron of the arts and allegedly, a lover of King James I. He was stabbed to death, on 23 August 1628, at the Greyhound Pub in Portsmouth byJohn Felton, an army officer who had been wounded in the earlier military adventure and believed he had been passed over for promotion by Buckingham.
