This beautiful countryside, not far from Brian Hatton's home in Broomy Hill, is where he spent his early years sketching and observing the local farm activities and scenery. Brian Hatton (1887-1916) is Hereford’s most celebrated artist, born in Whitecross and later living at Mount Craig, Broomy Hill. His artistic talent showed very young, nurtured by his family winning gold medals in competitions organised by the Royal Drawing Society. His outstanding ability led to introductions to Princess Louise, Queen Victoria’s daughter, and the eminent artist Unfortunately Hatton was prone to asthma and hay fever and, for the good of his health, he spent term times with friends of the family Dr. and Mrs. Lancaster in Swansea. Hatton studied briefly at Oxford, and at a painting school in Arbroath and started to work professionally at home, and later in London, mainly doing portrait commissions. At the outbreak of the First World War he enlisted in the Worcestershire Yeomanry. and married Lydia May Bidmead of Hereford in 1914 and ey had one daughter, Mary. Tragically he was killed on Easter Sunday April 23rd. 1916, at Oghratina in Egypt. Brian captured the countryside and rural life, the people and the fast-changing farming scene, animals, workers, Gypsies, and most of all his beloved horses. Breinton lies just to the west of Hereford - the name Breinton appears to be a modernised form Bruntone, meaning a village near a flowing stream. Breinton is a collection of hamlets including Warham, Upper Breinton, Lower Breinton, Breinton Common and Veldifer; with a church (St. Michael’s) and Village Hall. It is very rural though very close to the city, and changed little in the last 1000 years. One reason for that is the high quality of the deep red loam soils for agriculture and horticulture so relatively few new buildings have been built on the valuable land and secondly the beauty of the landscape, with vistas across hills, orchards, woods, and the valley of the River Wye.
