Gout of the thumb. Close-up of the swollen thumb of a 71-year-old male patient with acute gout affecting the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. Gout is a condition in which crystals of uric acid are deposited inside joints, usually due to high blood levels of uric acid (hyperpuricaemia). It is an extremely painful condition, which leads to swelling of the joint and intense pain on moving or even lightly touching the affected joint. Treatment is with painkilling drugs, and colchicine can also be taken to reduce the severity of an attack.
