If a stream of hydrosulphuric acid gas be transmitted through awatery solution of emetic tartar [vide fig. Ill, p. 629), the latter be-comes orange-red: if a small quantity of hydrochloric acid be thenadded, a flocculent orange-red precipitate [hydrated sesquisulphuret ofantimomj) takes place. This precipitate is to be collected and dried, and introduced into a green glass tube, and a current of hydrogen gastransmitted over it. When the process has gone on for a few minutes, the heat of a spirit-lampshould be applied to thesesquisulphuret: hydrosul-phuric acid and metallicantimony are produced. Aportion of the latter is [spu-riously ?] sublimed. Themetal is known to be anti-mony by dissolving it innitro-hydrochloric acid: thesolution forms a white pre-cipitate [Powder of Alga-roth) on the addition ofwater, and an orange-redone with hydrosulphuricacid gas, or hydrosulphateof ammonia.
