This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service Robert Cailliau (born 1947), Belgian computer scientist, with an early form of the websites and web browsers that he helped develop at CERN. Cailliau graduated in 1969 from the University of Ghent with a degree in electrical and mechanical engineering. In 1974 Cailliau moved to CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, becoming group leader of office computing systems in 1987. Between 1989 and 1994, working at CERN, Cailliau and British physicist Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web (WWW), a global network for information sharing based on hypertext documents. Cailliau retired in 2005. Photographed in June 1995.
