The fame of Stuart rests chiefly on his merits as a portrait-painter; and thoughhe often expressed a desire to execute some historical work, he never foundtime for the purpose. He possessed literary genius of a high order; his pene-tration was acute ; he reasoned upon the principles of his art with a depth ofphilosophy worthy of a master. His eloquence was peculiar and attractive;his voice was strong and deep; his enunciation clear and distinct; and hiscountenance came in aid of his voice, for his features were bold and lion-like,and no stranger ever passed him without mentally saying, That is no ordinary man. 414 THADDEUS THADDEUS KOSCIUSKO. THADDEUS KOSCIUSKO, the last generalissimo of the republic of Poland, oneof the noblest characters of his age, was descended from an ancient and noble,though not rich family, in Lithuania, and was born in 1756. He was educatedin the military school at Warsaw. The prince Adam Czartoriski, perceivinghis talents and industry, made him second lieutenant in the corps of cadets, andsent him, at his own expense, to France, where he studied drawing and themilitary art.
