William Herschel memorial window. Close-up of one of three stained glass windows dedicated to the memory of German-born British astronomer William Herschel (1738-1822) in St Laurence's Church, Upton, Slough, Berkshire, UK. Herschel constructed several telescopes (and is shown using one). He discovered Uranus in 1781 (not shown here). He also played a major role in setting up what became the Royal Astronomical Society. Knighted in 1816, he lived in this parish for many years and was a member of the congregation. The memorial window, was designed by Andrew Talyor after a bequest from Nora Cruickshank, was installed in 2001.
