Saint Croix island, in the St Croix River between the US State of Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, was the site of the first attempted settlement in North American by the French under the command of Pierre Degua, the Seiur de Mons, and Samuel de Champlain. The 1605 settlement was a failure but an international memorial to the settlers is located on the Maine shore overlooking the island. This image shows a bronze statue of a young, male, French settler. The bronze was installed ca 2003 and was created by Studio EIS, Ivan, Elliot and Debra Schwartz, sculptors. St Croix Island International Site is in Calais, Maine.
