The plume from Stromboli, one of Italy’s three active volcanoes, can be seen on clear days from the belvederes and balconies of the old town at Tropea, on the western coast of Calabria, which is perched high on vertical sandstone cliffs above luxuriant vegetation, fine sandy beaches and the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea.

The old town, on Calabria’s western coast, is a picturesque jumble of stone houses and apartments perched on high sandstone cliffs above a luxuriant green foreshore, popular sandy beaches and the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea. Public squares and streets end in belvederes and balconies offering panoramic views of the distant Aeolian Islands, including the active Stromboli volcano. Closer to hand, beyond the lush vegetation at the foot of the cliff, is a rocky promontory surmounted by the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, the rebuilt church of a medieval Benedictine monastery. Tropea, fringed by fine sandy beaches, is a holiday resort, popular particularly with Italians and Germans. It lies on the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) and is now marketed as “The Pearl of the Mediterranean”. Its reputation was much enhanced when it won the 2021 ‘Borgo dei Borghi’ (Village of the Villages) national contest, an annual award for the most beautiful village in Italy.
