Remains of Bunavoneader Whaling station on the shores of Loch A Siar (West Loch Tarbert), Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland


Site of historic whaling station founded by Norwegian Carl Herlofsen in 1904. In 1922 the site was bought by Lever Brothers, machines renewed and three ships bought for whaling in the North Atlantic. The main product was whale oil. It closed in 1929 and reopened briefly in the 1950's. It is the only remaining example of an early 20th century shore based whaling station in the and is an ancient historic monument
