One Derbyshire publication, Twist Magazine, warned villagers: "As the law stands, if their spectacular floral images depict the five Olympic rings , the Olympic mascots or even the phrase "Olympic Games', they would almost certainly be breaching the strict copyright belonging to the London Olympic Organising Committee. "Even well dressers displaying the year '2012' in petals, berries and nuts could contravene The London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006". The London 2012 website warns: "There are very few instances where the Games' Marks can be used without our consent" The clay well-dressing boards are soaked in water, often in village ponds, before volunteers, spend days, painstakingly creating the designs petal-by-petal. Well dressing (also once known as well flowering) is a summer custom practised in rural England in which wells, springs or other water sources are decorated with designs created from flower petals. The custom is most closely associated with the Peak District of Derbyshire and Staffordshire. The origins of the tradition are alternatively said to lie in pagan tradition or in giving thanks for the purity of the water drawn from certain wells during the period of the Black Death. It has been said to have originated in Tissington, Derbyshire in Rights Reserved - F Stop Press. Tel: +44 (0)1335 Image.
