The 1893 seed catalogues are well ad- vanced. Mr. Burpee's last forms closed December 1. Advertising by seedsmen this season is likely to be done with fewer insertions but larger spaces. California produces spinach seed in some quantity and can deliver the new crop seed in time for fall trade. South PORT onion growers report onions as not keeping well; this would affect the price of next year's seed. The scarcity of white onion seed is un- questioned, the trade prices named in the Florist recently were it anything below the mark. Wholesale dealers who have already issued price lists are usually declining to fill the scarce items like onion and beans at their own rates. The Mayflower for January will have two colored plates and a larger issue. It will contain heavy seed advertising in February and March. Sweet pea seed is likely to be in de- mand this season, and although there is a large visible supply of most kinds white is not plenty and is now selling at $1 to $ per pound. Whatever the retail catalogue prices may be on onion seed it is in no wise expected that dealers will change their custom of making closest quotations on bulk orders by letter. St. Paul —Sam Martin, until recently with L. L. May & Co., has opened a seed store on his own account at 475 St. Peter street. He has the best wishes of his friends in the trade for success in his venture. Red Wethersfield onion seed is the only variety that seems to
