Acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris seen on the cheek of a 14 year-old boy. Acne is a general term for skin spots formed when sebaceous glands become overactive and inflamed. Acne vulgaris is the most common acne, occurring typically during adolescence. Pustules (large red spots) develop where hair follicles become blocked with sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands. The top of the sebum plug turns black, forming a blackhead. Acne vulgaris occurs on the face, chest and back. Its mild form disappears in adulthood; more persistent and chronic acne results in infected cysts and permanent scarring.
