A military com-pany is formed and the boys parade the streets of Mobile with fife and drum andwooden guns. 1837.—First graduates, four in number. 1839.—On October 20, Rev. P. Mauvernay dies. Rev. John S. Bazinsucce eds him as president. Bishop Portier seeing the sad state of the college. SPRING HILL COLLEGE. 46 called to his aid the Fathers of Mercy. Five fathers arrive; Rev. ,Rev. Aubril, Rev. Lafont, Rev. St. Yves, Rev. Madeaure, Rev. C. Massippewas ordained priest and left for San Domingo. 1840.—Rev. D. F. Bach is president of the college. By a decree datedAugust 29 the Sovereign Pontiff Gregory XVI, grants the college the power toconfer degrees in theology and philosopy. 1841.—The Fathers of Mercy abandon the college and Bishop Portieragain takes charge. 1842.—Rev. C. Rampon is appointed president. The college is goingdown. Few students. 1843.—The bishop is obliged to come and teach at the college. G. Rapier is named prefect of discipline. A military company called theSpring Hill Lancers is formed under the direction of Col. R. S. Sands. An encamp-ment is made near the lake. 1844.—The Eudists Fathers of Vincennes take charge of the J. P. Bellieris appointed president. 1845.—Rev. J. P. Bellier and the Eudist
