Sandra Fretwell, 63, is volunteer Wardrobe Mistress for the Royal Manor Theatre company, on the Isle of Portland where she lives. Sandra has been making costumes for their upcoming production of 'The Wizard of Oz' which opens on 1st July 2017. She has just completed the 'magical' ruby slippers which Dorothy uses to get home to Kansas at the end of her adventures in Oz. Dorothy was famously played by Judy Garland in the 1939 film version of the story. In the story, the powerful 'Wizard' is eventually revealed to be just an ordinary middle-aged man who has kept his power by projecting a scary image whilst remaining hidden in the shadows, himself. When she was making the 'ruby' slippers for the play, Sandra couldn't help thinking of Prime Minister, Theresa May, who is known for her love of glitzy footwear and who will soon be heading-up 'Brexit' negotiations with the 'faceless' bureaucrats of Brussels. Perhaps, like the Wizard of Oz, they will be shown to be nothing more than middle-aged men, making lots of noise. If Mrs May had her own pair of 'magical ruby slippers', when negotiations got too tough . . . like Dorothy, she could click her heels three times and instantly return home; not to Kansas, in her case, but to the hallowed streets of Westminster.
