The country has but few marksof human habitation to cheer its lonelyand wild aspect, and for many miles on-ward, our way continues through a des-olate forest tract, alternated only bythe stations and little villages of theroad. Beyond Cuba Summit, there aremany brooks and glens of rugged beauty. Passing Olean, on the AlleghanyRiver, we come into the lands of theIndian Reservation, where we followthe wild banks of the Alleghany, be-tween lofty hills, as wild and desolateas itself. At Cattaraugus, 428 miles from NewYork, and 41 from Dunkirk, we tra-verse a deep valley, where the eye isrelieved for a little while, with scenesof gentler aspect than the unbrokenforest we have long traversed, and areto traverse still.
