They should be so situated that workmen areobliged to cross over a minimum of loose rock or slanting unevenfloor between the foot of the stair and the working place. Doublehandrails should be provided where the stair is open at both sides,though a single rail is sufficient where one side of the stair is protectedby the quarry face. The handrail should be high enough to preventa person from falling over, and a parallel rail should guard the spacebetween it and the stair as shown in Plate I
