Probably late 11th century, the ruined church in the middel distance is dedicated to St Martin, Bishop of Tours and missionary to Gaul, and one of the fathers of monasticism. . The church was partly destroyed in the 16th century during Henry VIII's suppression of the monasteries - in this case St Benet's north east of Norwich,- and although it continued in use, it had been abandoned by the beginning of the 19th century. It is one of four medieval churches in various states of repair in the parish of Shotesham, including the intact St Mary's in the
