An 1839 depiction of the mythological figures Sisyphus .Ixion and Tantalus. Sisyphus or Sisyphos was the founder and king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth) and was sentenced to rolling a boulder up a hill for eternity whilst Ixion was king of the Lapiths, the most ancient tribe of Thessaly and was was bound to a burning solar wheel for eternity. Tantalus also known as Atyus and sometimes known as King of Phrygia. He is remembered by the proverb of "Tantalean punishments" (being tempted by something one cannot have).
